Utility to calculate and graph co-oscillation tides
This utility calculates and plots the amplitude and phase of a co-oscillation tide in a narrow gulf. The solution is found for one tidal constituent at a time. It is advisable to read the theory, model and example before proceeding to an application.
Projects for which this utility can be used:
- Calculate the tides of Spencer Gulf, South Australia, compare the result with observations and modify the friction parameter to optimize the match between model and observations.
- Find the seiche periods for Spencer Gulf by varying the model period until resonance occurs.
- Investigate seiches in a rectangular semi-enclosed basin, by entering constant width and cross-sectional area and verifying the theoretical seiche period as a resonance in the model.
- Calculate the tides and seiche periods for any narrow gulf or basin by entering the appropriate topographic data.
This utility is based on A. K. Easton (1978) A reappraisal of the tides in Spencer Gulf, South Australia. Australian Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research 29, 467 - 477.
