Exercise 2: The topography of the ocean floor.

Compare the west Pacific trench system with the western boundary of the Pacific plate. The Kermadec and Tonga Trenches are produced by subduction of the Pacific plate, which moves northwestward, under the Indian-Australian plate. Subduction under the Philippine, Eurasian and Juan de Fuca plate produces the trench system of the northern hemisphere.
