SBE Sigma T (sigma_t)

Overview

σt is the density of sea water at a particular salinity, temperature, and assumed atmospheric pressure. The reader is encouraged to consult [Fotonoff] and [Millero] for algorithmic details. This parameter is computed for SBE37s, SBE16s, and SBE 16-03s.

Input

  1. salinity: units of PSU (PSS-78)

  2. temperature: ° C (IPTS-68)

Ancillary Requirements

None

MATLAB m-file

sw_sigt0.m
sw_smow.m

A detailed collection of MATLAB scripts written by Phil Morgan are available from CSIRO for this purpose and are listed in the appendix.

Output

sigma_t [kg/m^3] of salt water with properties S,T, P=0 (0 db gauge pressure)
