The figure shows the pictographs for the Egyptian numerals if the text is read from left to right.
If the text is to be read from right to left the pictographs face the opposite way.
(Pictographs of persons and animals always face the beginning of the line.)
The symbols for larger numbers are a water lily for 1,000 (in older documents several water lilies can sometimes sprout from a single root), a slightly bent finger for 10,000 and a frog or tadpole for 100,000.
