The German oceanographic expedition of the Meteor.

Excerpts from the report of the voyage.

"The political intentions the Admiralty connected with the research voyage were to again show its flag in as many foreign ports as possible."

....

"Many roads in the world are closed to German science nowadays, because numerous adversaries from the World War do not allow research of German scientists in their countries and colonies and will continue to do so for many years to come. One area of activity, however, remains accessible for German scientific curiosity, and that is the ocean."

A description of the problems created by the economic crisis and the hyper-inflation of the 1920s, which led to the laying-up of the half-finished research vessel in the shipyard, ends with the conclusion that a voyage into the Pacific is no longer feasible and the resigned remark:

"It follows that one has to direct one's attention elsewhere."
