Surges produced by tropical cyclones on the Australian west and east coasts. The map in the centre shows selected typical cyclone tracks. Sea level during cyclone Alby is shown on the left, sea level during cyclone Pam on the right. Both cyclones travelled south at about the same distance from the coast, but only on the west coast did the sea level set-up increase as the cyclone moved south.
