The balance of forces in geostrophic flow on the southern (left)
and northern (right) hemisphere. The pressure force is directed from
high (H)to low (L)pressure.
The Coriolis force is directed to the right of the
current direction on the northern hemisphere, to the left of the current
direction on the southern hemisphere. As a result, geostrophic currents have
the high pressure on their right in the northern hemisphere and to their left
in the southern hemisphere.
