Caution! Surface Mooring off Yarmouth

  • The University of Maine, and the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (DFO), plans to re-deploy a Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System (GoMOOS) buoy. The proposed location is west south-west of Yarmouth, 13 nm south of Lurcher Shoal.
  • The buoy is 2 m in diameter, with a mast that extends 3 m above the surface. The hull and mast are yellow, with the lettering 'PRIV' and other markings in black. The light is amber with flash sequence Fl(5)20s.
  • Depth: 100 m; Position: 43o37.50'N, 66o33.19'W; Scope: 200 m.
  • Mission: Measure wind speed/direction, visibility, air/sea temperature, wave height, current speed/direction, and salinity.

  • Planned duty cycle: approximately 6 months
